Welcome To Viburnum Missouri

Viburnum, in Iron County, is a small town in the middle of the Mark Twain National Forest. It is on State Highway 49, about 87 miles southwest of St. Louis and 123 miles from Springfield.

Viburnum has a long and colorful history beginning with the Osage Indians who lived and hunted here. About 1837, bands of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee began coming into the area.

Iron County was formed in 1857. As indicated by the county's name, minerals have been a large part of the area's history. As early as 1877 iron and lead were known to be in the area. The Sligo Furnace Company, formed in 1889, used the rich virgin timber to make charcoal to fire the furnaces which extracted iron. The furnace at Sligo created an industry in addition to farming and gave birth to a string of settlements, which included Viburnum. But by 1921 the Sligo Furnace Company had closed. During this time cattle and hogs would range in woods during summers, and be sold before winter with only a few kept to feed over. This happened as late as 1960. Horses too roamed on the open range in the new Viburnum.

During this time, small farms raised wheat and corn. In 1955 the St. Joe Company discovered lead ore, and started developing the area. St. Joe hired an engineering and city-planning firm to lay out the area for the new Viburnum, a town that would provide churches, schools, shopping areas and government.

The area climate is warm during summer when temperatures tend to be in the 70s, and very cold during winter when temperatures tend to be in the 30s. The warmest month of the year is July with an average maximum temperature of 89.9 degrees. The coldest month of the year is January with an average minimum temperature of 18.8 degrees. The annual average area precipitation is 40.6 inches. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. The wettest month of the year is May with an average rainfall of 4.4 inches.

Area attractions and events include Old Miner's Day, fourth of July fireworks, the Fort Davidson Civil War Re-enactment, the Quad County Raceway Mud Bog, Dillard Mill, Onondoga Cave, Fort Davidson State Historic Site and many others.

Public primary schools in Viburnum include Viburnum Elementary School and Viburnum High School. Colleges and universities include the University of Missouri-Rolla, Jefferson College, Saint Louis Community College-Meramec, Maryville University of St.Louis, Webster University, St. Charles County Community College and Washington University.

The Millstream Gardens Conservation Area is home of the Annual Missouri Whitewater Championships.

A large portion of Iron County consists of the Mark Twain National Forest. Hunters here can harvest deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel, quail and even wild boar in the heavily forested land. Even if you're not a hunter, a stroll along the many miles of the Ozark Trails will afford you such sights as a bald eagle, a fawn and her mother, flocks of turkey, raccoons and foxes and even black bears.

Iron County is also the home of two 9-hole golf courses: the Arcadia Valley Country Club Golf Course and the Viburnum Golf and Country Club. Both offer putting greens, swimming pools and much more. A new sports complex in Arcadia offers a hiking/biking trail, 4 baseball fields, surfaced track, and in the future, a skate park, soccer fields, volleyball fields and more.
